Adobe photoshop . Not too many designers in Goa use it.

Posted by site admin in General on November 14th, 2008 |  No Comments »

A lot of people however use it for illustration purposes as well despite of adobe illustrator being the industry standard for illustration purposes.
The amount of tutorials and resources available for Adobe Photoshop and illustrator on the internet today is overwhelming.
This has opened vast opportunities for youngsters who are into desktop publishing and designing business.
In Goa some people still use Corel draw and Corel photo paint in the DTP business. The most obvious reasons for this is that these people belong to the age group of 30-40 who had started their profession of graphic designing back in the 80s and they consider upgrading their skills to Photoshop very tedious at this stage and secondly using adobe files for press is different than Corel files.
Adobe Photoshop is vastly used by professional photographers for image enhancements and manipulations and a it is used by graphic designers along with illustrator for creating
stunning graphic designs and portfolios.

I am not too sure how much Corel draw has upgraded so as to create really impressive graphic designs however I can definitely say adobe products especially Photoshop rocks and I find it much more user friendly than the Corel counterparts.

Effect of global economic crisis on the Goan economy.

Posted by site admin in General on November 10th, 2008 |  No Comments »

It is like the formation of a bubble which burst in the end.
So the bubble has already burst and during the formation of the bubble many people made quick bucks and many did not make use of the opportunity, so those who missed the train, missed it, and there is no second chance so soon.Seems like the bubble will take a long time to form again.

Analyzing the impact of global meltdown and recession on Goan economy one can certainly say that the mining and real estate sector has taken a hit. Mining in Goa provides employment to thousands and indirect employment to even more. With around 85 million tones of iron ore lying idle in China and Australian mining companies competing in the mining market, the situation in Goa looks a bit gloomy at the moment. However analyst say that demand is going to increase in near future, some say by March or May 2009, of course it is unpredictable.
The real estate sector will not see a boom in sale as it was experiencing a few months back. Real estate rates in Goa have still not fallen compared to places like Mumbai and Bangalore, thanks to the beauty of Goa and its small geographical area and the continuing
tourist inflow which keeps the demand for land and real estate in Goa alive. Once the banks reduce interest rates ( sounds easy but difficult to implement) the real estate market should see an increase in sale.
Next are the small scale industries some of them being affected like steel, I.T. etc and some which have been affected to a smaller extend like fishing, hotel, tourism etc.
So depending on the type of business, each have been affected differently.
And lastly the retail sector, the retail sector in Goa I feel is the least affected as consumer spending has not decreased to a large extend and people are still spending on necessities and comforts.

So the bubble has already bursted and yes, the economy will definitely recover in near future, however the bubble will take a long time to form this time and will not be driven by market hype and excessive borrowing.

Flash banner for joomla

Posted by site admin in Computers and Internet on October 21st, 2008 |  No Comments »

Its working after a bit of research on Google.

Let me give you a brief overview of the Joomla environment on my PC so that you are in a position to edit it on your computer.

joomla version 1.5
Installed in c:\wamp\ as a folder called joomla.
To view the joomla site I Type : http://localhost/joomla in my browser.

So know you know how joomla is set up.

Before doing any changes locate where the banner ( which is in jpeg or png format) located in the joomla folder and delete it from the folder.

Now place the swf file in the c:\wamp\joomla\images folder.
Lets assume the flash file name is joomflash.swf.

Now when I type http://localhost/joomla/images/joomflash.swf
it should appear in the browser.

Ok now for the banner change.

The major changes have to me made to the template.
So go to your joomla backend and click on the manage template option.
Now click on edit template.
You will have to edit the css file and the html file.

1)modifying the css file.
In the css file see where the header tag is located, replace its parameter with your flash files parameters .Note that the location and the dimensions have to be accurate.

background: url (http://localhost/joomla/images/joomflash.swf);
height: 80px;
width: 945px;

2)modifying the html file
In the html file locate where header div tag is located. and add the following content between the div tags with the following code.

object classid=”clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,19,0″ width=”940″ height=”251″param name=”movie” value=”http://localhost/joomla/images/joomlaswf.swf” param name=”quality” value=”high” embed src=”http://localhost/joomla/images/joomlaswf.swf” quality=”high” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”940″ height=”251″>/embed/object

Sometimes you need to edit the html file only, depending on your template .

Woah. You must be thinking I am a geek to write the flash code.
I am not. This code appeared in the code section of dreamweaver when I just inserted the flash file in it.
Please note that the path http://localhost/joomla/images/joomlaswf.swf” ( which will be different in case you are hosting on the live server) must be correct or else it will not work.

That’s it , save the changes and view the site.

predictions for year 2008 and 2009 - a must for investors.

Posted by site admin in General on October 10th, 2008 |  2 Comments »

For those who haven’t heard what the webbot is here is a quick summary. The rest can skip this paragraph.

The webbot is a kind of project or a scientific method of predicting the future.
The web bot technology uses a system of spiders to crawl the Internet and search for keywords, much like a search engine does and the information is then complied and analysed.

This is what the Webbot had predicted back in 2006 which can be analysed now.

1)October 7 2008 to February 19 2008 will be filled with emotional intensity

2)In October Global emotional release event begins – largely economic.
The rest of the world will begin to seriously question the stability and reliability of the U.S. dollar.

3)Catastrophic collapse of the dollar is possible – as the language is active around that concept.
The Web Bot foresee consumer society confidence collapsing by mid November 2008.
could be a direct result of the recent government bailout and failure of several large financial institutions in the U.S. along with the devalued U.S. dollar and the increased cost of living.

4)Global economic collapse possible in Fall 2008 cascading off the U.S. woes.
Think of the U.S. economy as a lit fuse that was lit over the early part of 2008. The rest of the world has no choice but to react to the declining U.S. dollar and the enormous amount of debt that the U.S. has accumulated and put upon itself.

5)In late 2008 the rest of the world’s currencies are ‘touched off’ by the dollar and U.S. decline.
The continuing instability of the U.S. economy and financial systems will prove to be a catalyst for global unrest and uncertainty.

6)The Web Bot foresee a West Coast/Vancouver area large-scale earthquake around December 12, 2008.
Many have seen signs of this coming for quite some time. This may not be the “Big One”, but it will prove to be significant and very devastating to the area.

7)There will be a 2009 winter/spring natural disaster, which caused people to become angry about government response.
With the dramatic increase in natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and more, the government’s inability to respond to the immediate needs of the people will prove to be devastating for many.

8)Global Coastal Event likely in early to mid 2009
The Web Bot sees a permanent loss of low-lying territory globally and foresees that one continent in particular will get hit badly, but it does not say which one. Places to avoid: anything at sea level (Bangladesh/Florida/ etc).

Life is a lot easier, thanks to the internet.

Earlier I used to refer to Britannica encyclopedia
Now I log on to www.britannica.com/

Earlier I used to refer the oxford English dictionary
Now i log on to www.dictionary.com

Earlier I used to go to the telephone booth to make ISD calls
Now I used Skype.

Earlier my parents used to post letters and greeting cards to a distant relative in america,
Now I used yahoo and ecards

Earlier I used to buy the Times of India ( I still do However)
Now I mostly refer to epaper.timesofindia.com

I had to wait for a movie trailers to appear on television.
Now i can watch it instantly on you tube or the movie website.

I used to refer to yellow pages book.
Now I log on to sulekhaclassifieds.com.

And the list continues..

Most people in USA spend time online more than they do watching television and almost 40% of shopping is done online.

So are we being too dependent on the internet or are we using it only for our comforts and convenience ? personally I cant believe life without the internet, can you?

One of the hidden tourist spots of Goa.

Posted by site admin in Goa and tourism on September 1st, 2008 |  1 Comment »

There are a few tourist spots in Goa which can be classified as heavenly and this is one of them.
A place where the Gods relax, a place of divine sunset, a place where serenity transcends into the beautiful waters to create a super peaceful environment, a place not known much to the Indian tourists and visited by only a few English tourist and the locals, not sure about the name, however me and my friends have so far been referring to it as Khola .

One the way to Palolem and Patnem beach from Betul side as you move up towards the hills there is an muddy off road which leads to this beautiful place. This place is not easily accessible, which makes it a clean and peaceful place, preferred by most tourist from Europe.

A group of cottages and a descent shack ( owned by a foreigner, seems to me like a Russian) lies at the entrance. The beach is located just below the other side of the shack and a pool to the left of it where you can swim, relax, have beer and spend the whole day just lazing around.
The best time to visit this place is during the start of the tourist season in Goa as the pool is at its perfect water levels at that time and the shack too remains open for fresh Goan cuisine.

The spring water from the adjoining hills flow into the pool and the thick sand dune separates the salty sea water from the fresh pool water making it the best place to relax the whole day long.

I have been to this place twice . During our first visit we reached there by 11 a.m in the morning, after playing football on the beach we had mackeral reshado, fish fingers and shark ambot tik (with beer of course) for lunch. We made it to the pool about half and hour after lunch grabbing a bottle of beer and lazed ourselves in the water till 7 pm. The beautiful sunset made the place warm and so beautiful that it was truly bliss. We were so reluctant to go back home and had almost made up our mind to stay back however the cottages were booked leaving us with no other option.

These are the pictures that have been shot during my second visit, which was in August ( off-season) during which the shacks and cottages remain closed, and the beach merges with the pool .

Digital signage in Goa

Posted by site admin in General on August 26th, 2008 |  No Comments »

Typing became digital with the advent of computers, telephones became digital ( and wireless) with the advent of mobiles, photo labs have already turned digital.
And now the next big thing would be – Digital Signage or advertisements displayed, out of home, using digital media.

Digital signage is the process of displaying advertisements on modern display panels using networks to replace traditional print signs.

The advertisement which is basically a video file in flash format is produced in the advertising agencies office, and using internet connection it is send to a digital signage media player through which it is finally streamed on the display screen at the desired location.

Signage Layout

Signage Layout

The biggest advantage of digital signage is that is allows to display dynamic and upto date, graphic rich advertisements, using a broadband connection which can be updated easily.

Major metropolitan cities in India have already started using digital signage at high traffics locations and public places like malls, theatres, supermarkets, railway stations etc.

Digital signage in Goa is however still in its nascent stages probably due to its small population and low traffic in public places.

However a concept somewhat similar to digital signage has been deployed in Panjim bus stand. The adverts are mostly video clipping and are displayed using the cable operators network from the advertising agencies office located close to the bus stand and hence I would not consider it as a true digital signage network.

Goa still has a long way to go for the success of digital signage solutions and most digital signage providers ( which I am guessing will be mostly a non Goan company )will need to consider the returns of investment before deploying a digital signage network in Goa.

Search engine that pays you for searching.

Posted by site admin in Computers and Internet on August 8th, 2008 |  No Comments »

I have heard a lot of fake money making programs and scams on the internet.
However I was amazed to come across a search engine that pays for searching.
Yes you heard me right! Its Scour – which according to the English dictionary means to clean or rub.
The concept is very simple. You sign up for scour and make it your default search engine, now whenever you type in the keywords in the search box and click on search, you earn one point when the search results page is displayed.
What I like about scour is it rewards you with some points on signing up and secondly you can watch your progress in real time on the top right hand side of the page.
Once you make 6500 points you get a visa gift card of $25.
Whew ! Quite a lot to search isn’t it? However what comes to the rescue is you can vote a site for which will earn you two point for each vote and you can pass comments for a site which will earn you 3 points for each one.
Scour has its own terms and conditions which sound fair enough, for example it would
Suspend your account in case of repeated searching or spamming.
Scour is a level ahead amongst the major search engines in the way it performs the searches. It basically searches using yahoo, google and msn and returns an aggregate of those results.
Scour is really interesting and something to definitely watch out in near future.
You can sign up for scour using my referral link:
http://scour.com/invite/nbodiju

Am planning to increase my points and see what happens in future. Will definitely let you guys know if something interesting happens. I mean the Payouts! Because that is what ultimately matters, isnt it?

Organic spice plantation in Goa

Posted by site admin in Goa and tourism on August 5th, 2008 |  No Comments »

Trust me in case you are about to visit this place do not have your breakfast in the morning.

Located in the plush green surroundings of Ponda is a spice plantation called savoi spice farm.

We left Margao at around 9 am by bikes and made it at around 10:30, could have made it earlier in case we were aware of the directions. We were welcomed with cocum juice served in clay glasses and crispy cookies served in plates made from coconut shells. This was followed by a trip to the mountain side densely populated with spice plantations.

The host was very kind and polite and showed us around very professionally.
Beautiful greenery, serene ambiance, and not to mention some of the best spice plantations. There was also a small baby pool at one corner but was dry due to lack of rainfall.

At around 2:30 we were served lunch and as you can see from the picture above how much must have been wasted .After stuffing our tummy’s to the max, there was absolutely no space for dessert. Later we had to take a short nap which was inevitable .Later we headed to Bondla wild life sanctuary which is around 15km from savoi but as bad luck had it we had to make a u-turn as Bondla remains closed on Thursday.

By then it was getting dark and so we had to make it back to town. However we enjoyed our trip to savoi plantation at the end of the day and would definitely recommend you to visit savoi in case you need to experience something different.

More information about the pricing and the contact number can be obtained from their website http://www.savoiplantation.com/

December 212012 - is it a conspiracy or has the countdown actually started?

Posted by site admin in General on July 30th, 2008 |  2 Comments »

First of all let me tell you that the world will not come to an end on december 21st 2012 however the date will only mark a massive change in the climatic condition.well how massive? now one can say. Could be massive enought to destroy 1/3 of the world population. But Humanity shall survive.

The Mayans is one of the most accurate calender that ends on December 21 2012.
Why couldnt the mayans see beyond that?. The answer is that the solar system moves in a particular pattern and on december 21 2012 that pattern is going to change so the mayans just couldnt calculate beyond that and so did the iching of china.
If you would like to know why the mayan calender cannot prove the end of the earth then log on to http://www.universetoday.com/2008/05/19/no-doomsday-in-2012/.

Now lets leave the Mayans and Iching aside and move towards some real science stuff.
Nostradamus predicted that a planetary object will move towards our solar system between 2008-2015 and his predictions are coming true as NASA has already found Planet X or Niburu. So this is something worth to be considered as planetary alignment is largely responsible for climatic changes and the so called global warming rather than carbon emissions by humans which only boosts the global warming process.

Albert Einstein predicted of a polar shift.
Now this is very very important.Polar shifts have taken place in the past and they have been predicted in future as well.

When the solar particles reach our planet, the electromagnetically-loaded particles will move in a spiral along the magnetic lines: from the magnetic north pole to the magnetic south pole and back. While passing this north-south axis, they will move into the direction of the equator. When they arrive there, they will join into a super powerful “ring current.”

This “ring current” generates an intense magnetic field that is opposite to the earth’s magnetic field. This would cause the inner core to spin in the opposite direction and eventually the earths rotation would change which would result in major climatic catastropes and natural disasters.

But the question remains why December 21 2012 and why not any other day after that, it could also be 2020 or 2021?I believe that the mention of the date Dec 21, 2012 is simply a mistaken attempt to link the end of the Mayan calender to some stupid doomsday prophecy
There is no hardcore evidence as to arrive on the date December 21 2012 if anyone finds though please let me know.
My conclusion is what is happening now ( tsunamis, volcanoes, earthquakes etc) will only increase its frequency in the near future. However humanity will survive.

the google storm

Posted by site admin in Computers and Internet on March 7th, 2008 |  No Comments »

Over time cell phones have evolved from a normal call and message device to a highly sophisticated communication weapon .Google’s release of Android could mark another significant move in the history of the cell phone.
There are a number of mobile operating systems in existence today – Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm and most recently, Mac OS (on the iPhone) – but all these are owned by specific companies who have to be paid for using them however Google claims that its Android operating system can be used by just about anyone. It is based on Linux and is therefore open source. Any developer can use the software and make changes to it – add applications, change icons, include different interfaces - all without paying a single buck and hence the consequences of this is imaginable.

android1.gif

Cell phone prices will drop spectacularly as manufacturers will not have to spend large amounts on developing their own software or paying third party software developers. And Google having a pie share of the internet world will definitely make all the applications usable online.GPS most likely will be a free service.

Some sources say that Google has already started affiliating with major branded companies like Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung and others for the storm(android) that is all set to revolutionize the mobile industry.

What attracts most users to Google is its user friendly interface, impeccable online services like Google docs, Google email, Google earth and much more besides being the friendliest search engine.
Most of us do remember that Google had changed the rules for search engines long time ago but it would be foolish to blindly bet against the company doing the same in the mobile phone arena. Once this is for sure though, the coming months are likely to be quite exciting for mobile phone users.

A virus a day

Posted by site admin in Computers and Internet on January 24th, 2008 |  1 Comment »

Gone are the days when you could install a free version of AVG antivirus and stay away from the worries of data insecurity. In case you have an antivirus installed on your system you definitely need to have an internet conection, With the birth of a pc virus every month your pc is defiinitely going to get infected in case you dont update your antivirus scanner
A minimum of ten people people visit my friends mobile shop for some or the other kind of data transfer between the phones memory card and the pc.Although he has purchsed Norton antivirus 2008, he does not have an internet connection to download the updates, so i had to figure out how to manually update the scanner after getting bored of formatting his machine frequently.
A lot of other home users often get their pc jacked up after installing games and sharing infected datas or trojans, spybots and malicious scripts disguised as executables. Its just a matter of updating your antivirus twice a day to realize how true is the fact:-”prevention is better than cure”.
And in case if you might have just noticed some viruses dont get detected by certain anitivirus scanners and I often wonder why?
What if antivirus companies themselves develop viruses that cannot be detected by any scanner other than its own. Won’t that company be a billionare?Or is it just not possible? The online community of hackers is vast and keeps growing anually, for some its pure thrill but for others its business.

TATA 1 lakh car

Posted by site admin in General on January 12th, 2008 |  1 Comment »

The TATA 1 lakh car will definitely create a stir in the automobile industry.
Over time we have noticed a considerable difference in the amount of traffic on the goan roads.
Before 2000, college and school going students used to travel by cycles and most families had a single car, be it luxury, mid size or a small car.
After 2000 the roads in goa started getting congested which can mainly be attributed to the easy availibility of auto loans, increase in disposable income of people and introduction of quality vehicles at affordable rates like Honda Dio and maruti swift to name a few.
And now the TATA one lakh car!
Definitely it is going to be a boon for the middle class people, however regarding the traffic on goan roads either there wont be much liberty what the people of goa are enjoying on the roads till today, or quite possible the scenario will remain the same due to reasons which is beyond the scope of this article.
So lets just wait and watch.

Get rid of spectacles and contact lenses permanently.

I am sure a lot of you must have heard of a new technology called LASIK.
To summarize it in a single line.
LASIK is a laser eye surgery that gets rid of glasses and contact lenses permanently.
Please dont expect me to get into the intricacies of the procedure.
If you need more information you can always visit the website of MYEYE HOSPITAL.

But I was just wondering, what if the cost of LASIK gradually reduces with time and finally the surgery arrives at a cost which is easily affordable by most people.
So opticians ……… better be ware!!

Tips before you buy a laptop.

Posted by site admin in Computers and Internet on January 7th, 2008 |  2 Comments »

1.Firstly, laptop is not a fashion statement ( at least not for most of us) and you need to personalize your laptop depending on what your usage. For merely surfing, giving presentations, watching movies, music and basic office related work a dual core processor would suffice. For graphic designing and high end multimedia applications like games and video editing a core 2 Duo processor is a must.

2.Preferably go for a black or dark colored laptop unless you are going to take great care to avoid the dirt stains.

3.Do not buy laptops which have metal on any part of its outer body as it tends to rust soon ,had a very bad experience with a friends HP laptop whose outer speaker covers were of steel and he had to replace it due to rust.

4.Never consider hard disk space as an issue while purchasing laptops as external USB hard disk drives are getting cheaper by the day and will be easily affordable in near future. A 120 Gb external USB hard drive costs around 3300 INR.

5.Buy laptops that are feature rich, laptops most laptops (for instance lenovo) nowadays do come fully loaded with TV tuner card, integrated web camera, S video out, wifi , face recognition system etc.

6.Check out for service centers in your locality as most laptops come for a warranty period of one year and you have the facility of extending the laptop warranty for an extra cost depending from brand to brand.

I have found a very interesting site on information about laptops
